I'm calling Rachel Sharp. I am 26 years old and live in Lees Summit, Missouri. I am the mortgage operations assistant of a credit union. I've finally found a weight loss strategy that works for me and I've lost more than 100 pounds in a year.
I had been overweight since I was a little girl. I was bullied for all this during my studies. My weight made me shy and prevented me from making friends. I lacked confidence and self-esteem.
After graduating from high school, I tried several methods to lose weight. I counted the calories, I worked, and at one point, I even took a prescription weight loss pill from my doctor. It was frustrating and plunged me deep into depression. I was also in an abusive relationship from 18 to 21 years old. After this bad relationship, I felt even more lost than ever and the weight seemed to accumulate even more. Before I knew it, I was at my heaviest weight: 236 pounds.
My turning point was two years ago, when my new boyfriend (and now fiance!) And I went for a little hike.
It was only three kilometers long, but I could barely keep one kilometer. My feet ached, my knees hurt and I struggled to breathe. It was embarrassing and I was so ashamed of myself. Something had to change.
This is where I looked for more information about intermittent fasting.
My boyfriend used the 16: 8 method for health reasons, and we talked about it briefly. I was skeptical at first. But after I found an inspiring first-person article written by someone who managed to use intermittent fasting, I thought it might work for me.
The woman whose article interested me followed the 4: 3 method of fasting for two days, where she fasted for three days and ate for four days, in addition to counting calories. It was then (September 5, 2017) that I decided, by eating a snack of mixed nuts, to engage in the IF.
I decided to start my own a two-day intermittent fasting (ADF) method, where I went every two days (or 36 to 40 hours) without eating, also counting the number of calories I took.
When I started using the ADF, I calculated the caloric requirements of my body with the help of a total daily energy expenditure calculator. During my first week of fasting, I allowed myself up to 500 calories on the fasting day to wean myself off and go up to 40 hours without food. In fact, I did not change much to what I ate, apart from watching the number of calories I took. The second week of fasting, I was able to do the whole day of fasting without taking calories. Intermittent fasting was much easier than I thought.
Once I got used to this food program, I started to exchange less nutritious meals for healthier choices.
For example, I changed little things, like my 2 percent milk in almond milk, or I started measuring my pasta per serving instead of using only the whole box. Small changes can really bring a lot of success. During my first month of ADF, I lost 16 pounds. I was delighted to have finally found something that worked for me.
Here's what I usually eat in a day now:
Breakfast: Oat at night or banana
Lunch: Cauliflower rice with pepper / lemon shrimp or braised beef, or spinach with sweet potato, boiled egg and salsa
snacks: Mixed nuts, or a protein bar, or I also prepare my own tortilla chips with Xtreme Wellness Wellness Tortillas that are high in fiber and low in carbohydrates
Having dinner: Two-ingredient dough pizzas or baked chicken with vegetables
Dessert: Breyers Low-Carb Vanilla Ice Cream with Mixed Butter or Frozen Fruit Mixed in a Food Processor (Healthy Sorbet!)
After seven months of intermittent fasting and a weight loss of 25 kg, I decided to start adding physical activity to my life.
Before intermittent fasting, I had never worked. Now that I had lost weight, I was not feeling so heavy and I thought I could really push myself and help my body become stronger and healthier. I started using a couch-to-5k application and took my time, without exactly following the program, but it helped me a lot. I went from just two minutes to running, to a race of 20 to 28 minutes without stopping.
Finally, after a year of ADF, running every day of the day and losing 98 pounds, I also introduced bodybuilding in my life with the help of my boyfriend. I worked up to my current exercise routine. I run every day fast and try to walk two miles during my breaks at work. I wake up the days I am do not young. I have found that it is the perfect balance for me.
So I run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and my weight lifting on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. I rest on Sunday.
Whenever I feel discouraged or unmotivated, I remember why I started.
There have been times when I just wanted to give up and do not worry about it anymore. IF is not easy; it takes time and patience. Going without eating can be difficult. But he had a lot more health benefits for me, other than weight loss.
I've also found that if I'm busy during my fasting days, I'm much more likely to stay with that. But if you need it, you can consume up to 500 calories without disturbing anything. You listened to the signs of your body. But if it bothers you, eat. It's really good.
I am not the same girl that I was before this trip.
My weight loss experience has revealed the real me, and I never want to go back to the girl I was. I would have liked to know that I had this type of will and strength in me from the beginning because I overcame so many obstacles from the beginning that I would never have thought to succeed.
And I would also like to know that there would be people who would still criticize me after losing weight. Now, the reviews I receive are not so much about my size, but my method. People tend to discourage what they do not understand or agree with. I think the FI is one of those thorny issues. When you find what works for you, as long as you are in a good place physically and mentally while you do it, it's great. You just have to ignore them and trust the process. Nobody can control your life except you.
Since I started ADF, I have lost 108 pounds in one year and two months. I gain muscle and my body changes every day.
