Infertility is an incredibly frustrating and stressful problem that affects many more people than expected. In fact, more than 6 million couples in the United States (or one in six) suffer from infertility, defined as the inability to get pregnant after a year or more of unprotected sex – and this number should not drop anytime soon.

The sad part, infertility is rarely addressed in a comprehensive way – and much of the attention remains focused on the reproductive system. I have so many friends who follow IVF, IUI or other forms of fertility treatment without the help of their team to find out what supplements to take (beyond 39, a prenatal period), what foods to eat or how to monitor their vitamin levels and inflammation. This can often result in treatment failure if the woman is still under chronic stress, suppressed hormone, malnutrition or inflammation.

The good news: as a registered dietitian specialist in functional medicine, I've found that diet and nutritional status can dramatically affect your inflammation and your hormones, by essentially pressing the reset button on the fertility of your body.

Throughout my career, I have spent a lot of time creating protocols for autoimmune diseases, metabolic syndrome, weight loss, digestive distress and digestive diseases, and balancing female hormones. (with an emphasis on PCOS). and help with bowel restoration, glycemic control, diabetes management and body fat loss. But it was only when I started to experience infertility that I myself explored how these anti-inflammatory, restoring bowel and metabolic effects could affect fertility and healthy conception.

In fact, during the first six years of using the ketogenic diet as a tool in my clinic, I did not think I needed to go to the keto myself, because my blood sugar level was balanced, I was not overweight and not chronically inflamed. But after seeing what appeared to be the 50th "infertile" client getting pregnant after completing my ketosis treatment protocol (it always seems like everyone gets pregnant around you when you're trying to conceive!), J & # 39; I decided to try and explore the mechanisms of action. Spoiler: I now have a 3 year old girl. Needless to say, it worked for me too!
