Common Names: Brindleberry, Gambooge, Malabar Tamarind or Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA)

Garcinia Cambogia is a small fruit that looks like a miniature pumpkin. It is native to India and parts of Asia, and an extract of its fruit and skin is popular in many natural products for weight loss. The extract is hydroxycitric acid (HCA), supposed to suppress appetite and promote fat burning. Animal research supports these claims, but later trials on humans have been equivocal.

Garcinia cambogia is a tropical tree fruit in the shape of a yellowish pumpkin native to the country of India. In 1965, researchers identified HCA as being the main acid found in the fruits and skin of garcinia cambogia. According to the Indian folk tradition, garcinia cambogia has been prescribed for conditions such as rheumatism and intestinal disorders. Crust and extracts are often used as ingredients in Indian curry and condiment dishes. Garcinia cambogia and HCA extract are widely available in North America as components of many commercial dietary supplements. The main form of garcinia is in tablet or capsule form. Garcinia cambogia is often added to dietary supplements containing several different herbs and is often found exclusively with chromium picolinate in capsule form. HCA inhibits lipogenesis, decreases the production of cholesterol and fatty acids, increases the production of glycogen in the liver, suppresses appetite, increases the body's heat production by activating the process of thermogenesis. Potential dietary supplement for weight loss and appetite control.

Effect of Garcinia cambogia extract on serum leptin and insulin in mice
In this study, we examined the effects of 3.3% Garcinia cambogia extract on a 10% sucrose load in mice for 4 weeks. The treatment had no effect on body weight, fat pad weight, or serum glucose level. On the other hand, serum total cholesterol, triglycerides and non-negative fatty acids were observed. Serum insulin and leptin levels, as well as the leptin / WAT ratio, were lower in treated mice than in controls. These results suggest that the extract of G. cambogia effectively improves glucose metabolism and exhibits activity similar to leptin. Read more here
