Mediterranean diet

This diet has become popular in recent years after people had admitted that the Mediterranean population had a healthier heart than that of North America and Northern Europe, according to the Mayo Clinic.

So what does it consist of? Well, according to the Mayo Clinic, not bad.

  • Eat 7-10 servings of vegetables or fruit a day.
  • Whole grain pasta with pasta and bread.
  • Weekly portions of fish, poultry, beans and eggs.
  • Moderate portions of dairy products.
  • Limit the amount of red meat you eat.
  • Healthy fats like olive oil.

Flexitarian diet

As its name suggests, this diet, introduced by American dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner in his 2008 book, puts more emphasis on flexibility than on a strict diet. Its goal is essentially to switch to a more vegetal diet and further reduce your meat consumption. Thanks to excellent production, you will probably save a few cents while you're there.

If you are a certified carnivore and meat is a part of almost all your meals, the best way to proceed is to start small. Start by trying a main meal without meat a day and once it is bearable, try a full day without meat. Once you start experimenting with more cooking without resorting to some kind of meat, you can even try several days a week without meat.


Most diets have a purpose and although losing weight is the most common motivation, others, like the DASH diet, have an important motive. The name itself means "dietary approaches to stop hypertension and aims to prevent or reduce high blood pressure," according to the Mayo Clinic.

The main way to do this is to reduce salt intake and favor foods rich in potassium, calcium and magnesium. The standard diet recommends limiting your salt intake to 2,300 milligrams per day. This seems a little difficult to follow, but focusing on the following foods, it should be achievable.

  • Eat 4 to 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day
  • Dairy products should be 2 to 3 servings a day
  • Consume 4 to 5 servings of nuts, seeds and legumes per week
  • Limit sweets to less than 5 servings a week
  • Limit portions of meat and poultry to six servings of 30 grams per day

This one has been around since 2006 when a pharmacist, Mike McInnes, and his son published a book explaining that a big spoonful or two of honey before going to bed each night could be the key. The book explained how this little hack could help balance your blood sugar and activate your liver, so that it shifts to higher gear when burning fat.
