If you think that Indian cuisine is oily, heavy and unhealthy for you, it is not the case. Indian food includes a wide range of extremely healthy fruits and vegetables. More importantly, there are a number of ways to cook these local foods that can help maintain their freshness and nutrients. In addition, traditional Indian spices and herbs used in cooking are extremely healthy. Spices such as green or red peppers, turmeric, garlic, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and basil, which have medicinal and healing properties.

Nutritionist Rupali Dutta says, "Protein is important for weight loss, but the Indian diet is usually high in carbohydrates, so the amount of carbohydrate you consume needs to be controlled." The nutritionist recommended including in your diet some important sources of protein, such as non-vegetarian foods (chicken, eggs, meat), lentils, roti and yoghurt. "Pay attention to oils, fats and carbohydrates (especially snacks containing large amounts of carbohydrates), pay attention to portion control and the amount of fat you consume," said nutritionist Rupali Dutta. In addition, "Your meal should include a quarter of protein, vegetables and a glass of milk or curd.Try to replace your roti with pure rotten besan or chana roti."

When you are hungry between meals, instead of popcorn or a pack of potato chips, you can always take healthy snacks. These include a handful of nuts, a sandwich with fresh vegetables and a slice of cottage cheese, a vegetable soup or a fruit smoothie. These snacks can help you stay full for a long time.

Delhi-based nutritionist Pooja Malhotra has suggested some simple and effective tips for losing weight quickly:

  • Eat freshly prepared meals from local and seasonal ingredients
  • Eat a healthy breakfast such as parantha, idli, dosa, poha, uttapam, daliya, eggs, curd, etc.
  • Eat dal-subzi-roti-gherkin for lunch or rice-dal, rajma, chhole, kadhi or seasonal vegetables such as saag and makki ki roti
  • Dal-chawal or khichadi could be your perfect dinner
  • Eat 6-7 small, frequent meals. Apart from main meals, take the following meals: fruits, nuts, salads, buttermilk, peanuts, etc.
  • Take your first meal within 30 minutes after waking up and last meal at least 2 hours before bed
  • Avoid prepared, packaged, ready-to-eat foods
