"I was very good at laying down and getting someone to block my body," says Mary Drizigacker, mother of two, from Mesa. "There have not been many pictures of my whole body in the last 7 or 8 years because I had avoided the camera."

After having babies, Mary says that she did not like what she saw in the mirror or on the scale.

"I just knew from the inside that I was not happy with myself, and I felt so ashamed that I let myself go like that."

So, last year, Mary made a big change by launching the Keto diet with high fat and carbohydrates.

And then during the summer, she started intermittent fasting, which, she says, has spent her weight loss at top speed, losing at least 35 pounds since June.

"I feel amazing, I feel refreshed, I feel like I have a lot more energy with my kids, my kids love it, I'm more active with them."

Here's how intermittent fasting works: Like Mary, you can give yourself a small window to eat every day, fast for sixteen hours and eat for eight hours.

You can also follow the 5: 2 pattern in which you normally eat five days a week and severely restrict your calories the other two days.

"This is not a new concept," says Dr. Sonal Haerter, an internist in Phoenix. "We have been doing this for many years."

Dr. Haerter does not consider Mary as one of her patients, but she also practices intermittent fasting. She says that at first she had to work gradually up to sixteen hours a day, then twelve hours, but that the benefits were worth it.

"Based on studies in the animal, it shows that there is not only weight loss, but improved focus. Better energy, lower blood pressure, better blood sugar, better cholesterol panels. "

But Dr. Haerter warns you that it's always best to consult your doctor before starting intermittent fasting.

Fatigue, headaches and binge eating after the end of your fast can lead to side effects.

For Mary, the social aspect can be the most difficult, not always being able to eat whenever her family eats.

"I will always sit at the table with them, but I will not eat, but it is difficult when I cook food and I feel it!" she explains.

The proof is Mary's pride: she has just donated three bags of clothes that are no longer fit. Mary tells ABC15 that she's not looking back!

"I'm no longer hooked! I used to be in it all the time … I do not feel connected to food or a schedule. I can live my life by day the day and what I feel … I am more in tune with my body. "

Intermittent fasting may not be suitable for everyone. If you are pregnant, have multiple health problems, or are taking multiple medications, think twice before starting. Again, Dr. Haerter suggests you always consult your doctor before trying something new like this.
