I have aged when I was a teenager.
The doctors diagnosed knee arthritis when I was 14 years old. I was tired all the time. I was grumpy and mocking people who were close to my heart more than you are supposed to have when you're a teenager. I continued to grow up to 300 kg in my early twenties, no matter how many workouts or how much bullshit I ate, low in fat and calories.
After 18 months of training 90 minutes a day, six days a week, I again weighed 300 pounds, and I felt old. Laboratory tests showed that I was at high risk of stroke and heart attack, and that my brain function was declining before the age of 30. My blood sugar level was high enough to qualify me as "pre-diabetic" and my libido had been affected.
Whatever your birthday, when you feel so old, you have a choice. You can accept it as is or you can look for a way out. As a computer hacker in Silicon Valley, I made the decision to do with my body and my brain what I was doing every day with Internet security issues. Whether in hell or high tide, I would go out of this existence, no matter what. I knew there was a better way.
Now, the word "biohacking" is in the dictionary of Miriam Webster and my name is in the definition. My new book Super human explains what you can do today to live much longer than Mother Nature does, after 20 years of running a non-profit anti-aging association and interviewing hundreds of experts. The only problem is that if you do this, you will have to deal with the side effects – feeling younger, having more libido and a better brain.
Here are five non-negotiable questions when it comes to leading a dynamic and powerful life for decades, more than you think.
Master your metabolism
When your body only knows how to burn the sugar to get energy, you must eat every few hours to feel good. The typical scenario: you have lunch, then in the middle of the morning, you are looking for a snack where you could do what you want, you kick in the ass. It's incredibly impractical.
The worst part is that if you can not recharge your blood glucose the minute your body wants it, you feel hungry, distracted and grouchy. When you want to do things and live your life, having to look for food 20 times a day is an obstacle.
When you are young, your metabolism is flexible. It can burn fat to get energy, sugar and it works fine if you skip a meal or two. To recover this energy, live longer and fuel your libido, force your metabolism to be flexible.
To be in charge of your metabolism, use from time to time a little inflammatory ketogenic diet that I recommend. The bulletproof diet, which has helped people lose more than 1 million pounds. Just have some carbs once in a while, because the "dirty" kernel diet of endless pork rind also stops metabolic flexibility.
And some days, skip breakfast altogether. Instead, take black coffee or Bulletproof coffee (zero carbs, zero protein, but with butter and Brain Octane oil) to force your body to burn fat to get energy instead of sugar.
If you control your metabolism, all in life is easier. I promise. Moreover, this mental muffin disappears.
Turn your room into a sleep cave
There is a chapter in my new anti-aging book called Sleep or Die. No tasteless language – sleep is this critical. A night of bad sleep can reduce your body's ability to manage your blood glucose by 40%.
Many factors affect the quality of your sleep: diet, level of physical activity, medications, hormones, stress, work schedule … the sleep hacking blog articles that I have written are enough for them only to constitute a series of books! The good news is that you will not have to adjust all this: do what gives you the most benefits without worrying about the rest. Here they are:
Configure your sleeping environment so that no light enters. Get blackout curtains, unplug anything with a backlight and even tap the smallest light spots from chargers, for example. If necessary, attach curtains to eliminate bursts of light from the edges of your windows.
The result is that if you measure your sleep (I use the Oura ring), you will notice that you get a deeper sleep and more dreams. Young people have more and decrease with age … unless you repair your curtains.
Many studies show that even a small amount of light tells your brain that it is the day that disturbs your sleep. I've doubled my deep sleep by using special glasses that block far more than the blue light, called TrueDark. (disclosure: I filed the TrueDark patents and I founded them)
Your brain also likes to sleep in a cool room, so remember your thermostat and see how your vigilance will change the next day.
Better sleep (not necessarily more sleep) significantly increases testosterone and growth hormone!
Keep an eye on your hormones
Hormones are your boss in many ways. When testosterone, for example, decreases, your motivation, your mood, your muscle tone and your sex life diminish. Ladies, this also applies to you – when your testosterone reservoir levels naturally lower than normal, look for jerky arms and zero libido.
It does not stop at the sex hormones. Hormones that control stress, metabolism, energy production (thyroid) … are all indications of what you can do to improve your presence in the world.
At age 26, laboratory tests showed that my testosterone and estrogen content was lower than that of my mother. (Thanks, obesity.) Words can not explain how badly you feel and how bad your brain is when testosterone goes down.
If you are in your twenties or thirties, have your basic hormone levels tested and get a copy of these results for yourself. That way, when you reach midlife and beyond, you can have your hormones tested regularly to see when they begin a slow and creeping decline in love handles and feeling miserable.
You can have the sex hormones tested at age 70 and your results will tell you that you have a "normal" testosterone level for a 70-year-old. Screw this on. If you want to have the impression of feeling in your thirties, you want to have the hormonal profile of a 30 year old man. This is where your baselines come in.
If you have already gone beyond this point, you can tell your doctor that you do not want normal hormones for your age. Tell your doctor that you want your hormones to look like what they were at the age of 30, so that you can feel at your best and resist debilitating diseases. Do not take no for an answer.
If you want to have a satisfying love life, muscle mass and functioning brain at age 60, or even 100, you'd better take control of your hormones. The alternative is the movie "Grumpy Old Men", the most perfect representation of what low testosterone does to your personality.
Hack your junk and get some sun
One thing that fails with age is your reproductive organs. After 40 years, Mother Nature thinks you no longer need it and is diverting resources. For men, this means that even if you can still do it, it's not the same thing. For women, sparse tissues, less lubricated, less trained and less known as parts of aging.
The annoyances of aging are now optional.
As a father of biohacking, my job is to try anything that improves human performance, including in the bedroom. There are things that men and women can do that can restore – even improve – our most sensitive parts.
They range from truly working supplements (arginine, DHEA, and many others) to shock wave sonic treatments that I write about this permanent and unexpected increase in my height, and affordable anti-aging treatments that restore my wife's vagina in the state where she was 25 … including curling toes. It's 50 years old, after having two children.
We are in a new era where you do not have to expect a boring or dysfunctional sex life as you get older, and if you have one, we know how to hack it. After all, who wants to live more than 100 years if you can not do it?
Speaking of sunrise, 20 minutes of morning sun on your bare skin will improve your sleep and increase the stimulating power of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Studies show that if you expose your balls to the sun, your testosterone also increases. (Be careful where you try this one).
Change your vision of the whole world with gratitude
The main thing that will allow you to continue to emit energy for decades longer than expected is to have a reason to live. Gratitude is the key.
At the time my children were young, I started with them a bedtime ritual, where we sit together and share three things for which we are grateful. All family members take turns playing. The whole process only takes 10 minutes, but the benefits are found in all parts of your life.
Gratitude literally reconnects your brain and rejuvenates it. At the 40-year-old Zen Neuroscience brain training center in Seattle, five days of intense computer-guided gratitude training systematically restore participants' brain waves to look more like younger brain waves. It is quantifiable and measurable and hard.
You do not have to plug computers into your brain to take advantage of them – find excuses throughout the day to be grateful. What you are grateful for does not matter, just remember it and it can rejuvenate you.
If you try some of the things you just read, you'll be grateful for your new energy, for the incredible restorative sleep you've had in just 7 hours and for the fact that you woke up with a crutch.
If the reality is so beautiful, maybe it's worth starting work that can help you grow old as a super human!
